Practical effects, like eyes with eye lids, were shot on each location to allow for eye blinks to be added in post.
The characters were designed in 2D and then sent off to the John Nolan Studio (UK) to be modeled in 3D. After tweaks and revisions they were cut with a CNC machine and then textured and painted.
This was the first 2D design we nailed. Approved on January 7th 2015 it was sent to the UK for 3D modeling.
Being an Art Director with OCD tendencies benefits the end result but is sometimes a bit demanding for other team members and partners.
The sections in the face below have different textures and paint applications. We ended up going with the lower right – a silicon textured and somewhat translucent application that filmed and photographed really well.
